Greenfield-Central’s boys’ tennis team turned in a strong team effort Monday evening, earning a 4-1 victory over conference opponent Shelbyville. The Cougars relied on steady singles play and key contributions in doubles to secure the win. Alex Michalek got GC on the board first with a dominant performance at No. 2 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0. Michalek’s consistency and court coverage helped set the tone early for the Cougars. At No. 1 singles, Nathan Roberts followed up with a composed and efficient win of his own, defeating his opponent 6-1, 6-0 to push GC ahead 2-0. Shelbyville picked up their lone point at No. 1 doubles, where Jacob Welch and Kasen Jarnecke battled but ultimately fell 2-6, 0-6 to a strong Shelbyville team. Ethan Ortwein and Raleigh Gantt delivered the clinching point for the Cougars at No. 2 doubles with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Their teamwork and consistent play sealed the match and gave GC a 3-1 lead. The final match of the night was also the longest and most dramatic. At No. 3 singles, Andrew White showed grit and determination after dropping the first set 4-6 and falling behind 3-4 in the second. He rallied to win the second set 6-4 and then took the decisive match tiebreak 10-6 to complete the 4-1 team victory. In JV play, GC came up just short in a 3-4 loss. While the Cougars were unable to grab a win in singles, they swept all three doubles courts. JV victories came from the teams of Jack Herrin/Kayden Green, Jack Joyner/Parker Springman, and Kane Dreesen/Landon Leistner. It was a well-rounded effort by both varsity and JV, and the Cougars will look to keep building on this momentum as conference play continues at Pendleton on Wednesday.
